BLIND GUARDIAN, FRANK HERBERT Y EL UNIVERSO DE “DUNE”

Blind Guardian conseguían definitivamente su sonido característico y el éxito musical con su tercer trabajo “Tales from the Twilight World”, publicado en 1990, y que contenía multitud de referencias literarias como J.R.R. Tolkien, Stephen King o Frank Herbert. Es precisamente este último autor, creador del universo de ciencia ficción de “Dune”, quien inspiró el tema que abría este plástico de forma arrolladora. Los bardos (nombre con el que los seguidores más fieles de la banda llaman a sus componentes) reflejaron en “Traveler in Time” (“Viajero del Tiempo”) una de las sagas de la literatura de ciencia ficción más exitosas de todos los tiempos. Y es que “Dune”, publicada en 1965 consiguió el Premio Hugo y el recién estrenado Premio Nébula a la mejor novela de ciencia ficción. Le seguirían otras cinco secuelas publicadas a finales de los 70 y en los 80 y una película, estrenada en 1984 y dirigida por David Lynch, además de miniseries y videojuegos.

Blind Guardian, cuyos componentes son ávidos lectores de literatura fantástica y de ciencia ficción, plasman en un tema lleno de fuerza, melodía y velocidad un universo situado 20.000 años en el futuro, en una Vía Láctea dominada por un imperio galáctico de estructura feudal donde las diferentes casas o señoríos se disputan el poder (Atreides, Harkonnen, Fremen, Corrino, etc.). Los temas tratados a lo largo de la saga son, entre otros, el mesianismo, la ecología, la vida en el desierto (Dune es, de hecho, el nombre de un planeta desierto, también llamado Arrakis en la novela) y otros aspectos de carácter económico, político y religioso.
